چکیده
For notational convenience, we often omit any reference to the sample space, Ω. However, we still systematically distinguish a random variable from one of its realizations, by using upper cases for the former and lower cases, for the latter. A realization from a random variable is also referred to as an observed value. Note that this upper/lower case convention is not respected by Weisberg, in the main textbook for this course.

Independence and Product Systems
Starting from elementary considerations about independence and Markov processes in classical probability we arrive at the new concept of conditional monotone independence (or operator-valued monotone independence). With the help of product systems of Hilbert modules we show that monotone conditional independence arises naturally in dilation theory. One of the most fundamental concepts in probab...
متن کاملPresentation and Content: The Use of Base Rates as a Continuous Variable
Do subjects, in probability revision experiments, generally neglect base rates due to the use of a representativeness heuristic, or does the use of base rates depend on what we call the internal problem representation"! In Experiment 1, we used Kahneman and Tversky's (1973) engineerlawyer problem, where random sampling of descriptions is crucial to the internal representation of the problem as ...
متن کاملProbabilistic Preliminaries for Lecture Notes on Property Testing
We assume that the reader is familiar with the basic notions of probability theory. In this section, we merely present the probabilistic notations that will be used extensively in the lecture notes. Throughout the entire text we refer only to discrete probability distributions. Specifically, the underlying probability space consists of the set of all strings of a certain length l, taken with un...
متن کاملCS 880 : Advanced Complexity Theory 2 / 1 / 2008 Lecture 5 : Dictatorship Testing
Today we will finish developing a tester for dictator functions and then explore connections of this test (and the linearity test discussed last lecture) with error correcting codes and probabilisti-cally checkable proofs. In the last lecture, we introduced and analyzed a local tester for linearity and began to reverse engineer how it could be modified to yield a test for dictatorships. Recall ...
متن کاملNon-Asymptotic Theory of Random Matrices Lecture 18: Strong invertibility of subgaussian matrices and Small ball probability via arithmetic progression
1 Strong invertibility of subgaussian matrices In the last lecture, we derived an estimate for the smallest singular value of a subgaussian random matrix; Theorem 1. Let A be a n × n subgaussian matrix. Then, for any > 0, P(s n (A) < ε √ n) ≤ cε + Cn −1 2 (1) In particular, this implies s n (A) ∼ 1 √ n with high probability. However, (1) cannot show P(s n (A) < ε √ n) → 0 as → 0 because of the ...
